3D Animations Portfolio - Grumpy Jack in the Pub
This is the second animation that I have made, and is the first involving character movment
The animation was another university project, this time a 2nd year assignment. The animation had to be based around the theme of someone walking into a bar, attracts the attention of the bar person, and then orders a drink. The rest of the animation was up to me (that's me as in the person making the animation, not me as in the person marking the assignment). The animation had the fill about 20 seconds.
For my animation I chose to base mine on a true incident that I endureded wilst working at a local shop in 2002. What happened was that a customer bought just one chocolate bar, costing £1 (it was a medium sized bar) and then payed for it with a £20 note. I had run out of £5 notes and therefore had to give the customer a £10 note and nine £1 coins. The customer was not happy and threaterned to complain, before leaving the shop in a not-to-happy mood.
However in order to make the animation more exciting I was intending to have it so that the customer here seeks revenge on the bar person. So with that in mind here is the full storyline on what the animation was about (or at least what it should have been about).
A well-built farmer-type person, known as "Grumpy Jack" walks into the pub. When he gets to the bar he attracts the attention of a very smartly dressed bar person, who is infact the manager of the pub. Grumpy Jack orders a pint of beer, which the bar person then pulls and serves it to Jack, who then pays for it with a £20 note. The bar person the goes to the till to sort out change for Jack. When the bar person gives out the change Jack gets a bit annoyed because he has been given a £10 note nine £1 coins in change, instead of a £5 note, a £10 and four £1 coins. Jack then demends a reason as to why he has been given no fiver. The bar person explains to Jack that there were no more fivers left in the till. Jack gets very angry now and decided to take out his anger on the bar person by threatening her before punching her to the ground.
Now that was how the animation was supposed to have turned out. However due to problems that I encountered upon, the character movements are far from realistic. As the screenshots show, parts of the characters bodies seem to move through each other. Not what you would expect in a real human being. My main problem here was that I could not get the characters to turn around perfectly. Instead I ended up having characters turning around and their arms and legs crossed through each other (ouch!)
Incidently, the pub featured in the animation is modeled on the "Pattenmakers Arms" in Duffield, Derbyshire, which is where I obtained some of the textures used for the animation. A big thank you goes out to Ian and Jane, who were the landlords at the time of making this animation, for giving me permission to take the textures.
